Albertina d'Urso

Bio

Italian photographer Albertina d'Urso (Milan, 1976) studied at the ICP (International Center of Photography), at TPW (Toscana Photographic Workshops) and at the Agency VII, under the guidance of masters like David Alan Harvey, Alex Webb and Antonin Kratochvil.

She is focused mainly in social and humanitarian reportages.

Her dedication to this kind of issues began in 2004 when she went to Mumbai for a charity: her work gave life to a book, Bombayslum, published by Skirà, and an exhibition at “Libreria degli Atellani” in Milan and deeply changed her life and her professional career.

In 2006 she participated to the "Kabul mission of the municipality of Milan", a work aimed at showing the consequences of the war in Afghanistan and the efforts of the mission ISAF 8 and the Italian NGOs to restore the situation, culminated with the "Milano-Kabul no stop" exhibition in the "Ottagono", in Arcade Vittorio Emanuele and with two books : "Respiro del Mondo 5 Afghanistan, Kabul", and "Km 5072, Milano-Kabul no stop". In 2007 she was selected for "Focus on Monferrato Masterclass" a project that consist in 12 young photographers, guided by Stanley Greene and Kadir van Lohuizen and assigned to document different sides of life in Piedmont and won the "Canon Young Photographers Award" with her project "Welcome to Compton", a reportage about gangs and violence in Los Angeles. In 2008 Albertina exhibited "Spirit of Shekhawati", a work about this small region of India forgotten by the economic boom Trento, Milan and Rome, was featured in "Young Blood", the annual of Italian talents who have recived international prizes in the creative and research fields and won a Bronze Award at the festival "Orvieto Fotografia". In 2009 Albertina exhibited her work "Bodies for sale, Mumbai" in Insa Art Center in Seoul during the "New Italian Film & Art Festival" and in Rivus Gallery in Incheon Catholic University during the "Cultural Interchange Between Korea and Italy” and participated to the exhibition "Abruzzo 2009", inaugurated in Dal Verme Theater in Milan and than traveling around Italyand was among the nominees for the New York Photo Awards 2009. Her book “TI MOUN YO, children of Haiti” realized for the onlus N.P.H. and published by Contrasto, was presented with an exhibition in “Forma, Centro Internazionale di Fotografia” in Milan; and while the exhibition continued to travel the book was voted “documentary book of the year” at the International Photography Award.

The following year, after the devasting earthquake Albertina went back to Haiti different times for the same onlus and as a correspondent of important magazines. A picture of hers won the second prize at the “Lens Culture International Exposure Award” and participated to the connected exhibition at 291 Gallery in San Francisco, at Speos Gallery in Paris and at VII Gallery in New York.

Again in 2010 with her work “Nehru Nagar” she was among the finalists of the “Deeper prespecive photographer of the year” at the Lucie Awards.

Her work is regularly featured in magazines like Vanity Fair, Panorama, L’Espresso, Foto8, Vision, Burn, 100eyes… She contributed to collectives books as CHILDREN, moments of humanity (2006) and the series of books Asia Unique (2008) and partecipated in several collectives exhibition including: “13×17padiglioneitalia” (travelling all around Italy since 2005),”Scatti per Bene” (Sothebys, Milan, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010), “Convivio” (FieraMilanocity, Milan, 2008), “Male di Miele” (Wannabe Gallery, Milan, 2008).
